GIRLS!

A teaser for “Girls,” the new HBO series I’m writing for, aired tonight before “Boardwalk Empire.” The season will debut April 2012. We’re already writing Season 2. It’s the most fun job I’ve ever had. Tune in!

I just spend a few days in Vieques for my married friends’ joint birthday party with a crew of close friends. It was like a destination wedding but much more low key. The island of Vieques (off Puerto Rico) has some of the prettiest beaches I’ve ever seen, with calm, warm, aqua water, white sand and lush greenery. Until 2003, it was largely occupied by the US army which used to practice bombings there, or something like that. The culture on the island seems a little soulless, but there’s semi wild horses everywhere. They’re owned by locals who don’t own enough land to keep the horses, so they just graze all over the island and are rounded up when necessary. It seems like an innovative idea except I heard there’s lots of horse/car accidents. We stayed a Hix Island House which is a great eco, architectural place. (The only downside is it’s not on the beach). The W recently opened up a mega hotel there that’s very nice and on the beach, but kind of corporate. It’s a very easy flight from NYC, far more challenging from L.A. Definitely worth the trip if you go with some friends.

I wrote a story for this week’s New York Times Thursday Styles Section about how I traded in my ashtanga yoga practice for personal training.

I had the good fortune to visit NYC for a few warm days in November. It was great. Highlights included dining at the recently renovated Le Bernardin, which reminds me of a very elegant sailboat. The service is so spectacular, they even have little stools for handbags. I think it’s the best food in NYC, maybe the world. I also checked out Jeffrey’s, a new West Village casual place from the chef behind Joseph Leonard and Fedora and Pulquiero, which is like La Esquina 2.0. And I returned to favorite haunts like the Spotted Pig, Locanda Verde and Cafe Cluny. Besides eating, I saw some cool art, like the Cattelan show at the Guggenheim, Gursky and Serra at Gagosian and Nan Goldin at Matthew Marks.

I just got back from a 2 day trip to Esalen in Big Sur with my oldest, dearest friend who lives in SF. Esalen is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s an institute where most people go for workshops on everything from yoga to Gestalt therapy, but I just do a “personal retreat.” This means I soak in the gorgeous hot springs, get the best massages of my life, hike in the redwoods, do my own yoga and slip out for meals at my favorite local restaurants like Big Sur Bakery, Post Ranch Inn, Nepenthe, Ventana and Deetjens. Heavenly. This year, I happened to be there during the Monarch butterfly migration. They were everywhere. It’s always beautiful at Esalen but this time it was extra special beautiful.

My pal Mindy Kaling (aka Kelly Kapoor from “The Office) is really on a multi-hyphenate, multi-threat roll. Besides acting, writing, producing and directing episodes of “The Office,” she just relaunched her awesome shopping blog. When she first launched it in 2008, I became instantly hooked. I even wrote a “Night Out” column for The New York Times Sunday Styles section to have a good excuse to go shopping with her. Her book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” launches in November so pre-order it right now. I’ve had a sneak peak and I predict a rocket rise to the top of the bestseller list. Mindy for president!

It’s a big, great week of TV debuts for two of my favorite ladies. Check out “2 Broke Girls” on CBS tomorrow. My pal Whitney Cummings’ exec produced and co-created with the legendary Michael Patrick King of “Sex and the City” fame. Whitney’s show called “Whitney” airs on NBC on Thurs. She stars in that one. On Tuesday, “The New Girl” airs on Fox. It was created by my friend Liz Meriwether and it stars the always excellent Zooey Deschanel as, well, Liz. Liz and Whitney are two of the smartest, funniest, hardest working, coolest, most supportive women I’ve ever known. I’m not surprised at all by their big successes. I’m thrilled for them and wish them the best of luck.

I wrote the Kate Bosworth cover story for the September issue of C magazine. When I interviewed her in July, she was very cagey about her relationship with Alexander Skarsgard, my favorite “True Blood” vampire. In my story, I called him her “on again off again” boyfriend because I had heard a rumor from an entertainment industry source that they had broken up (They have broken up and gotten back together a lot over two years). Now it seems they are really done. Who knows. Like most actresses, she was very pretty and tiny and nice. I’m also featured on the contributor’s page wearing the black and white Alice Temperly caftan I wrote the day after my wedding. I have to come up with some more occasions to wear it because I love it.
